Proventil is a nonaddictive prescription bronchodilator used commonly in the treatment of bronchial asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and allergic reactions. It reduces congestion by preventing the release of histamines, thus relaxing the muscles of the bronchial tubes and opening the air passages. It may take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to take effect. Proventil is available in metered spray, tablet, liquid, or capsule form.

Some common side effects include nervousness, headaches, rapid heartbeat, trembling or sleeplessness. Uncommon side effects (which require immediate medical attention) include chest pain, swelling of the mouth and throat or wheezing.
