Saint Agnes

Agnes rejected the love of the son of a Roman prefect as she considered herself a bride of Christ. The prefect, seeing his son almost dying from unrequited love, threatened to consign Agnes to a brothel unless she made a sacrifice to Vesta and gave herself to his son. She refused and was led naked through the streets to the brothel, covered only by her miraculously grown hair. When the prefect’s son came to take Agnes by force, he was struck dead by an angel sent to protect her.

Agnes was sentenced to death by fire, but the flames leapt back and consumed her executioners. Agnes finally received her martyrdom when another executioner was ordered to stab her through the throat.
