A type of dental restoration used to repair badly damaged tooth. Unlike a
full gold crown or
porcelain crown which is very expensive and is a time consuming process, a SSC is an inexpensive peice of preformatted metal that is more or less glued to the remaining portion of tooth.
This restoration will last many years (I know people with SSC's that are thirty plus years old), but it is much harsher on the area just above the
gum line. It is also a shinny metalic color which makes in improper for use in the front of the mouth. In an emergency this would be the type of restoration done as a
porcelain crown requires a
lab die to be created after an
impression has been taken.
