"That'll Be The Day" was written by Norman Petty, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Allison. Holly first recorded it as a country song in 1956, but it got little attention. On February 25, 1957, Holly recorded it again as a rock and roll song with his new group, the Crickets, and by late September it was their first number one hit. "That'll Be The Day" was also one John Lennon and Paul McCartney's first recordings; their band the Quarry Men recorded it before becoming the Beatles, and is included on the Beatles' Anthology 1 collection. The song is also refered to by the lyric "This'll be the day that I die" in Don McLean's "American Pie." And sighmoan adds that "That'll Be The Day" is unusual for a pop song in that it begins with the chorus.
