"
The Encyclopedia of Fantasy" is the companion volume to "
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" (ed.
John Clute/
Peter Nicholls). It is an excellent
reference work for the
fantasy genre, giving concise information about
authors,
titles and
themes, spanning different
media but with an
emphasis on
fantasy literature.
Due to the increased popularity of
fantasy literature, and the fact that the boundaries between
science fiction and
fantasy are sometimes hard to discern, many references to
fantasy appeared in "
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction". In 1997 this resulted in a separate volume (ed.
John Clute/
John Grant) devoted exclusively to
fantasy literature, themes, works and authors as well as
television,
games and
comics.
The work is as
comprehensive as its sibling. It won both the
Hugo award and the
World Fantasy award.
