Most people know that more money is made from designer perfumes than is ever made from the haute couture clothing collection's themselves.

While the clothes are only affordable for, and of interest to the supremely wealthy and privileged, the scent is priced within the reach of the average man or woman in the street.

The cynical marketing ploy is to create an image of style and sophistication associated with the brand name and then flog the fragrance to the masses thus giving them the impression they are buying themselves a bit of luxury.

In some cases, however, an entire range of clothing is created to serve only as a loss leader for the perfume. So a perfume is created and a designer name with a signature clothing range is marketed, merely to facilitate the sale of the scent at a later date.
