The Torres Strait is the northernmost bit of Australia. It's 150 km of water between the Australian mainland and Papua New Guinea. The straits have over 100 islands whose total population is about 8,000. The Torres Strait is named for the Spanish explorer Luis Vaez de Torres who sailed into the Torres Strait in 1606.
