"America's Northway", the lowest numbered east-to-west United States highway.

Two chains of streets, roads and highways running along the northern extremes of the lower 48 states.  Whether intended or not, the highway's number is a good fences make good neighbors gesture to Canada, asserting sovereignty over the territory it crosses, while at the same time, reassuring that no more is claimed.

The western section begins in Everett, Washington on Puget sound and ends in St Ignace, MIchigan at the northern terminus of the bridge over the Straits of Mackinac.
