This is I'm sure everyone's favourite part of the news. I am of course referring to the part at the end where, having dealt with all the crime and political stories, the
newsreaders have to cheer up their audience.
e.g. ...and finally... a cat from Surrey had a lucky escape today when...
Being a nation of pet owners, this always seems to go down rather well. For some reason, we are able to forget that crime is rising, education standards dropping, everything is ok, because Joe Bloggs' cat avoided an accident, ah well, we can all rest more easily in our beds now, can't we?
I am not saying that it is a bad thing that the cat survived, far from it, but the whole thing does seem a bit trivial, which I suppose is its point....
