The Indian city formerly known as Madras. Chennai is the now official Indian and old Tamil name.
It is the largest city in South India and the fourth largest in the country. Founded by the British East India Company in 1639, it is a relatively young city. Known for its movie industry - India releases more motion pictures than any other country - and for the University of Madras. It is also considered to be the key to travelling in South India.
