the chucalho is a traditional Brazilian percussion instrument. They can easily be made at home. Chucalhos are nothing more a large steel can with a number of rocks inside, they are shaken to produce a rattling sound. Sand can even be used.Even very poor musicians [ in the financial sense ] can afford one, which is why the instrument is popular among indiginous musicians. A good piece of music that uses the chucalho is the Weather Report song Boogie Woogie Waltz from their album Sweetnighter. it is used by Dom um Ramao to produce a rattling sound that meshes will with brushed drums.

More expensive chucalhos are shakers with cymbal shaped metal disks inside.
