The standard,
Master style combination
locks are simply constructed. A
steel catch with an internal locking mechanism. To unlock said mechanism, one must grasp the dial firmly with one's
fingers and turn it completely a few times
clockwise. This is done to reset the pins, tumblers, etc. inside. Once again turn clockwise, to the first number in the
combination. Upon reaching said number, turn the dial
counterclockwise once completely, passing the second number of the combination. Continue turning counterclockwise until you again reach the second number in the combination.
Stop here. Turn clockwise once again until you reach the final number in the combination. Do not pass it.
Pull down firmly on the body of the lock, and with any luck at all, the casp will release.
(This is also a neat instrumental Fugazi song on the album Red Medicine.)
