The method of making an infusion is similar to that of brewing tea. It is the most effective way to harness the properties of the softer parts of a plant such as the leaves or flowers. Infusions can be substituted for water in recipes for cosmetic and medicinal products like ointments, potions, balms and oils.
The quantity of herb to be used will vary according to the strength of infusion required, the herb used, and it's desired purpose. The standard ratio is one heaped teaspoon of dried herbs to one cup of boiling water. It
is preferable though, to use fresh herbs, in which case the quantity of herb should be doubled. In most cases, the effectiveness of the infusion may be enhanced by adding more herb.
- Roughly chop the herb or mixture of herb and place in a teapot or
heatproof cup.
- Pour on boiling water. Leave for 10 minutes to steep. covering the teapot or cup will avoid the loss of volatile oils in the steam.
- Strain and allow to cool.
The infusion should be used as soon as possible after preparation.
