From the Greek philo-, meaning love and the Greek xenos, meaning stranger. (The common prefix used in English is either xen- or xeno-, from xenos). This word owes its continued existence (such as it is) to those of us who like to collect obscure words.
Compare to xenophile, one who loves foreigners, aliens and foreign/alien things.
