A plimsoll or plimsole is a type of shoe that was popular in England from their invention in 1930 onward. They are athletic shoes with a canvas uppers and a rubber sole, developed as beachwear. They were originally called sand-shoes, gaining the nickname plimsoll in the 1870s.
In the UK they are often known as a sandshoes or sand-shoes; in Australia they may be called a canvas shoe; and in the US sneakers, tennis shoes, deck shoes, or keds.
