Stroke volume is the term used to describe the volume of blood pumped out by a single ventricle during each heartbeat. The stroke volume of the average healthy adult is 70 ml/beat; stroke volume is a useful measurement in itself, and can also be used to work out a person’s cardiac output. A fall in a person’s stroke volume indicates a weak heart, or serious loss of blood.
