An artifically created English word, based on Greek words meaning "God's law". The word evokes a deliberate contrast with "autonomy," meaning self-law.

Theonomy holds up a particular view of God's law: the human race, both generally and specifically, is bound to keep the whole of God's law, including all the Mosaic (civil and judicial) laws given to Israel as a nation (see Leviticus), as well as the more familiar laws which are summarised in the Ten Commandments.
