Japanese for "
Tiger".
Was thought to have been used in the
phrase "
Tora! Tora! Tora!" during the Japanese
attack at
Pearl Harbor in 1941. However, Japanese
historians have shown that it was not so. What was said
sounded like "Tora! Tora! Tora!"; but was in fact two
different code words -- "To" and "Ra".
"To" indicated that the attack had begun, and "Ra" that success had been achieved.
When said in great speed and excitement, this apparently sounded like "Tora! Tora! Tora!" to the American radio operators.
