Why you should know this song:

1. (good) Ever burned a mix CD? You'll almost always have some extra time left over but often it's less than two minutes and most songs are more than two minutes. This one isn't. It'll fit right in the pesky little coin pocket of your next Mix CD. Waste no possible moment. Fill them all with music.

2. (better) Play the guitar or bass? Maybe not so much? Not at all even? Do you ever find yourself out with people, and those that are musically learn'd are having a grand old time "jamming"? Do you feel left out by your own lack of jam skills? Well, ANYbody can play this song. Practice till you get good, and the funny genius of the lyrics will prevent most people from noticing that the only song you serenade the crowd with is incredibly simplistic, musically speaking.

3. (best) It's a great song. Really. Go buy the CD. I like to think of it as Flea's message to the world and what a brilliant message it is. So plaintive you might almost call it indie whining except that it glistens with rock and roll fever. We've all got this sort of wry grin inside of us - sarcasm and triumph in the face of all there is to face.

This is my bass tab for the song, which is performed by Flea. This can be played on an acoustic guitar as well, and you can even follow the same fret pattern, just use the E and A strings only. This song also has a minor percussion to it, basically a tap in the longer pauses between most notes (i.e.: between "3-----3" but not "3-3"). I've found the best way to do this is to hold the pick closer to its top than you normally would, and then tap it between the strings lightly on the body of the bass. (On an acoustic guitar, just play slightly below the opening, still tapping the pick on the body.) If you really want to play this song correctly, I would advise listening to it a couple hundred times. There is a certain, distinctive tone hidden in the notes that is impossible to reproduce onscreen.
