Funny moniker given to the
football field at
Boise State University's
Bronco Stadium. Named such because the field is made of a rather
interesting blue Astroturf.
Just about all teams that use artificial turf try to de-emphasize the fakeness of it, by using green turf. However, Boise State installed blue turf in 1986, as the school's colors are blue and orange.
Over the years, there's been stories that birds have plunged to their death, mistaking the large blue field for a lake. This hasn't been confirmed (but is quite funny...).
The Humanitarian Bowl (this year, on December 31, 2001, on ESPN) takes place on Bronco Stadium's smurf turf.
The strange turf makes Boise State a popular pick in college football video games which feature actual stadiums. It just looks cool.
