Eight to Fourteen modulation, part of the
red book CD specification. On most media, one
byte is encoded as eight
bits. On an audio CD, each byte is encoded as 14 data bits plus three merging bits. The extra bits are used in
error correction and to reassemble
frames as they are read off the disc.
