Dagoba,
a Cingalese dome-shaped shrine containing relics, the worship of which is one of the principal characteristics of Buddhism. In a Buddhist temple, the dagoba is a structure which occupies the place of an altar in a Christian church; they are found also in Buddhist topes and tumuli. The word pagoda would appear to be a corruption of dagoba.
