Ulu Vakk from the planet Lupra is the real name of Color Kid.
As an assistant during a science experiment, Ulu was struck by a
multi-colored ray from another dimension. Ulu then had the ability
to change to color of any object or person. Color Kid's ability
to change color has a different effect upon Kryptonite than
most substances. As Kryptonite's effects on natives of Krypton
changes depending upon its color, when Color Kid changes the color
of Kryptonite, the effect it has changes as well.
Ulu tried out for the Legion of Super-Heroes, but was told by
Brainiac 5 that his abilities were not great enough for the Legion.
He was admitted into the Legion of Substitute Heroes and was the
first addition of that group. Color Kid also has the dubious honor
of being the only member of the Subs to have changed sex. Having been infected with the
Grandin Gender Reversal Disease by Infectious Lass, Color Kid changed from
male to female for a short time.
