An eclectic field of research that mechanical engineers get into sometimes. Tribologists study friction in all kinds of ways. They know that terms like coefficient of friction are merely approximations of phenomena that we are still trying to understand. As is typical in most engineering disciplines, tribologists often resort to real-life, empirical data, and finite element methods when they can't get any elegant or continuous mathematical models.
