Matko the gypsy, who lives on the banks of the Danube with his 17 year old son Zare, smuggling with the Russians, fails a big business. He owes money to the big gangster Dadan, who has a sister, Afrodita, to marry. They strike a deal : Afrodita is to marry Zare. But Zare is in love with Ida, and Afrodita wants a more romantic marriage.

However this plot summary only begins to describe this wacky comedy : the bride runs away from her marriage, dead grandfathers ressucitate, the local mafia boss spends his time looking at the end of Casablanca (This could be the start of a beautiful friendship), and the evil guy ends up bathing in excrement...

The great gypsy music that is played throughout the movie (at one point, the musicians are tied to a tree...), certainly help in keeping the happy mood all along. And Emir Kusturica's directing is great all along. If you liked Time of the Gypsies, this movie is for you!
