Sue Barton (person)

Sue Barton is a fictional character and star of a series of books by Helen Dore Boylston. The first book, Sue Barton, Student Nurse was published in 1936 and is the story of Sue's years as a nursing student in a traditional nursing school in the 1930s. The series of books goes on through her career -- including a stint as superintendent of nurses.

The books in the series include:

• Sue Barton, Student Nurse, 1936. Sue goes to nursing school, meets her best friend Kit and gets a crush on Bill, a young doctor.
• Sue Barton, Senior Nurse, 1937. The senior year of nursing school, Sue learns about birthing babies, the hazards of surgery and wins a proposal from Dr. Bill.
• Sue Barton, Visiting Nurse, 1938. Career woman Sue heads off to New York City to become a visiting nurse. She rooms with Kit and serves the ill and needy. She breaks off her engagement to Dr. Bill.
• Sue Barton, Rural Nurse, 1939. Tired of the city, Sue moves to New Hampshire, reunites with Bill and survives personal tragedy and a hurricane.
• Sue Barton, Superintendent of Nurses, 1940. Sue marries Bill and becomes head of a new, small nursing school. She fights with Bill, starts hating her job and generally has a hard time in this role.
• Sue Barton, Neighborhood Nurse, 1949. Years later, now the mother of three kids (with one on the way), Sue asks herself why she gave up her career to stay home with diapers and runny noses. But after an event-filled summer, she realizes there's no place like home for her.
• Sue Barton, Staff Nurse, 1952. Bill contracts tuberculosis and is sent off to recover at a sanitarium. This leaves Sue home with four kids, but she has no choice but to return to work, and does so with the style and efficiency we have come to expect from Sue.
