A
strategy sometimes employed in fantasy
role-playing games such as
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
When faced with an insurmountable foe(s) and the distinct possibility of certain death, the token magic-user of the group grabs the nearest mysterious magical weapon/artifact of unknown powers (often something the group has only picked up in the last room), dumps as much magical energy into it as he possibly can--generally, until it begins to glow, smoke, and vibrate ominously--and then hands it back to someone with a good Dexterity score, who proceeds to chuck it end-over-end at the incarnation of mortal peril looming before them with the hope that whatever happens, at least the heroes gave as good as they got.
This succeeds far more often than it has any right to.
