Savannah's caucasian population largely consists of silver-haired attorneys in dark blue blazers (seersucker suits in the summer), overexercised middle-aged women in big-brimmed round hats, and embittered students from the local art college. Plus mosquitoes. The pace of life is slow and hardly anything really changes. The tendency of Savannahians to look down on other, "lesser" cities -- at one time it was the only city in Georgia, after all -- is viewed by other Georgians with amusement and has led to Chatham County being dubbed "The Independent Republic of Chatham". Savannah does two things really well: Springtime and food. As of this writing there is still no Starbucks*, but there is a fantastic pizza place called Vinnie Van Go-Go's.

Also, the screen name of adult film actress Shannon Wilsey, who committed suicide in 1994 at the age of twenty-three.
