Son of King Edward the Elder of England, Edmund "the Magnificent" (also just Edmund I) followed his half-brother Athelstan on the throne of England. During his reign (939-946), he won a lot of territory from the Danish living in England, and gave some of it to the king of the Scots to ensure his allegiance. Edmund was murdered at the age of 25, stabbed in the stomach while joining in the struggle to arrest an intruder. He was succeeded on the throne by his brother Edred (also spelled Eadred).
