The film version was released in 1964 by Warner Bros. Originally the director, Geroge Cukor, wanted Cary Grant to play the role of Higgins but he declined and Rex Harrison reprised his stage role for the movie. Audrey Hepburn replaced Julie Andrews as Eliza but unlike Andrews, Hepburn's voice had to be dubbed by Marni Nixon.

The lavish production won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Actor for Harrison.
