In philosophy, a normative statement is one that tells you how you should act. As such, normative statements are properly firmly in the realm of ethics. In the social sciences it is used in much the same way, but as scientists are not supposed to be overly judgmental, a default ethics of cultural relativism is assumed.

In the field of law, normative jurisprudence refers to what one might term legal philosophy; it concerns the goals and driving force of law. Considerations of whether the justice system should be attempting to provide the most good to society as a whole, or focus entirely on serving justice to wrongdoers; does the law reflect an absolute objective truth, or a culturally relative or social contract type system?
