A mentor figure is a character-type in fiction who functions to teach the protagonist a new way of relating to life and the world : new skills, worldview, spiritual vision and moral/ethical perspective, mythic reality, etc. Mentor-figures tend to be¬ only wiser and nobler than their proteges but also impatient and demanding, constantly testing the worthiness of their proteges. Examples of mentor figures include Merlin the Magician for King Arthur and Obi-wan Kenobi for Luke Skywalker.
