I'm poor, functionally unemployed (due to the suckiness of my agency), and miserable. Today, I went to the bank to request a new chequebook - not that I have any money to write cheques for. As I approached, a woman was backing out of the bank with a buggy. I stood aside for her, and then saw that she was struggling a little, and moved to open the other side of the double doors.

'Thanks for letting me struggle. You're such a gentleman!' She told me sarcastically.

I apologised, and watched her storm off. Esprit d'escalier says I should have said 'And I'm sure you're the perfect lady for pointing it out.'

I pride myself on gentlemanly conduct, and her remark stung. Just another thing to depress me on this deeply dull day.
