On Patriotism
Float your flag on freedom’s loft
Of honest pigeon signals,
Autumn breezes stunted soft
And morning sunlight fickle;
Warmth about the banner’s air
With doves to bear its conscience
Pressed by pages, fond and fair,
Will scathe it ‘fore it launches.
