An Auxilliary Power Unit, or APU, is usually a small turbine engine connected to an electrical generator. APUs supply power to a large vehicle's electronics prior to the vehicle's launch.
When the vehicle (usually a large aircraft or spacecraft) can power its electronics from its internal power plant, the APUs are no longer needed, and the vehicle can operate as normal.
