A Peppermint Crisp is a kind of chocolate bar peculiar to South Africa (although it can be found in foreign cities with enterprising expatriate deli owners). The filling is a long, thin sheet of bright green peppermint-flavoured sugar, folded and fluted so that there are long pepperminty tunnels running from one end of the bar to the other. The really cool thing about a Peppermint Crisp when you’re eight or nine is that if you bite both ends off, it makes an excellent straw to drink your milk through (mothers hate this, which is an added bonus). Later on when you progress to more adult vices, a Peppermist Crisp carefully inserted into the side of a cored apple makes a delicious pipe for the smoking of illicit substances. You can eat it afterwards when the munchies strike.
tres equis informs me Peppermint Crisps have existed in Australia for decades -- so much for smug nationalism...
