Kaya is a type of jam that is widely used in Singapore and Malaysia. It is made mainly from coconut milk, eggs, sugar and pandan leaves.
While the ingredients may sound a bit weird, kaya is very delicious, having a rich thick taste that ideally is not too sweet and bursting with pandan fragrance. It is normally served in the morning, spread with butter on slices of bread.
Roti kaya, as bread spread with kaya is known in Singapore and Malaysia, is a popular breakfast, complimented by a cup of coffee or tea from the friendly neighbourhood kopitiam.
