Mike called.
The first line of a handwritten message
written on an envelope, left on the counter in the kitchen.
Her roommate had written it, but was not around.
He didnt leave a message
was line two.
Josie, the roommate, who didn't believe in punctuation,
knew she would be asked that later and so left the
preemptive answer.
Sarah looked at the note and then out the window.
It was past eight and dark.
The only lights outside the apartment were
from the building next door,
half vacant and exhausted, like her own.
Did she have Mike's phone number? (probably somewhere)
Was she curious to get an explanation for the quick exit
(six weeks ago)?
Sarah found a pen and added three words to the note,
got a beer, and went to bed.
