Λακεδαιμων

The son of Zeus and Taygete (Table 6 and Table 25). He married Sparta, the daughter of Eurotas, who died without sons and left his knigdom to his son-in-law. He gave the people his name - Lacedaemonians - and the capital of the country took his wife's name - Sparta. His children were Amyclas, who succeeded him as king of Sparta, and Eurydice the wife of Acrisius. In some versions Asine and Himerus were added. The latter was said to have assulted his sister and in remorse he threw himself into the river Marathon, which was thereafter called the Himerus until its name was changed to Eurotas.
