Tony bar is a generic name referring to any unspecified good old bar in Malta. It can be used like John Bull or Joe Average are used for people.

Tony bar, Tonys Bar, toni Bars, and a multitude of other derivative names make up what I estimate to be about 25% of all watering holes in Malta. If outlets in the Paceville area are excluded the proportion rises considerably.

What it takes to be a Tony bar:

Name: Besides the obvious "Tony bar" and its derivatives any Tony bar has to have a cliché name with one or more grammatical or spelling mistakes
Opening Hours: The typical Tony bar business hours can only be derived by applying obscure trigonometric functions to the Cantor Set, Pi, and the number of members in the owner's family
Clientele: Anyone is welcome at a Tony bar, but a substantial part of the regulars has to be equally divided between over 80s who drink tea from a glass with halib tal-bott and people whose work attire requires them to have two inches of their ass crack visible. Also de rigueur is an ancient pet.
