I would recommend Robert Graves' The White Goddess, A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myths, for very interesting speculations on the persistence of the Triple Goddess myths in pre-Christian times and how the Goddess manifests herself in different cultures.

At the death of Jesus:

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:25

Is this the presence of the White Goddess? Is Jesus the meek the final triumph of the Goddess over the fiercely patriarchal desert god of the Jews?
