Popular radio comedian who was famous for his deadpan delivery and his ongoing feuds with Jack Benny. The best part of his show was called "Allen's Alley" which featured Allen acting as interviewer asking a question of the day to various people down in the alley. These people included Mrs. Nussbaum a Jewish woman, Titus Moody, who was a New Englander with a voice that could easily have sold Pepperidge Farm products and Senator Claghorn, an old Southern windbag who was the basis for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn. Unfortunately, Allen was never able to make the transition to television successfully, perhaps in part because his show was a little more intellectual than Benny's. This coupled with the fact that he died in 1956 might explain why his popularity is not where it should be today.
