Vladimir is also one of the older regions of
Russia, and has many beautiful places and sights. It was attacked by the
Mongols (or
Tatars) in the
1300s in a horrible siege battle. One of the most impressive
monuments in town is the
Golden Gate, which is one of the old town gates that was part of the
kreml, or town wall. (This is where the name
Kremlin comes from.) You can still see the marks and gouges from
weapons on the
walls of the
gate. Within the gate, up a flight of stairs, is a
museum dedicated to the history of the
mongol siege.
