Vladimir is also one of the older regions of Russia, and has many beautiful places and sights. It was attacked by the Mongols (or Tatars) in the 1300s in a horrible siege battle. One of the most impressive monuments in town is the Golden Gate, which is one of the old town gates that was part of the kreml, or town wall. (This is where the name Kremlin comes from.) You can still see the marks and gouges from weapons on the walls of the gate. Within the gate, up a flight of stairs, is a museum dedicated to the history of the mongol siege.
