The most successful English football team ever, having won 18 league titles, they dominated the English league in the 1970s and 1980s. For a while in the late 70s and early 80s they were the best team in Europe winning 4 European Champions Cups in 8 years.

Key players during this period included Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and the goalkeepers Ray Clemence and Bruce Grobelaar.

In the late 80s the club suffered two body blows. The first being at the 1985 European Cup final when some "fans" rioted and many people were killed. The club and all other English clubs were banned from Europe for 6 years. The second at a 1989 FA Cup tie at Hillsborough where many Liverpool fans were killed in a crush.

The team has struggled to regain former glories in the 1990s altho they still remain one of England's top clubs. Current players include the forwards Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen.
