Strange Maine is a store on Congress Street in
Portland,
Maine. Once inhabiting a tiny old
jewelry store, it moved next door to a nicer, bigger old jewelry store.
However, there is absolutely no jewelry to be found in this store, beyond the old buttons of 80's new wave bands and local punk groups. Really a sort of grand cultural recycling center that sells tapes, comics, movies, vinyl, video games, and eclectic books. Brendan, the sole proprietor, is always quick with wisdom and random trivia, and might cut you a deal if you buy a lot of records and can justify your purpose for purchase.
The clientele generally range from tourists who marvel at the old movie posters and buy nothing, to the record junkies who will spend hours searching the racks for rare imports while shooting the breeze.
