The new Vietnamese writing system
introduced by Alexandre de Rhodes in
1548. Quoc ngu replaced the Chinese calligraphic script previously in use.
The alphabet consists of 17 consonants and 6 vowels along with 3 diacritics used to change vowel quality and 5 diacritics
used to mark the different tones.
