i have a terrible memory, and in addition to forgetting the mnemonics, even if i remember them i usually fail to recall the things they're supposed to help me recall. I never did remember the order of operations ones; thankfully I usually somehow manage to works things out in that regard. That said, i remember one mnemonic that still utterly delights me. It's designed to help one recall the order of the solar system's planets, moving outward from the Sun:
Mary's "virgin" explanation makes Joseph suspect upstairs neighbour. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.) It must have been formulated relatively recently as it avoids attempting to include the now dwarf planet Pluto.
It turns out that I never needed any artificial means; I had images of the planets nd their order burned into my memory from the sheer number of times I saw them as a child. In fact, it was one of those things that baffled me about other peoople; that they struggled to remember this order. For me it was like recognising animals, a bit of information so basic that surely everyone knew it. That I remember the mnemonic is probably down to the fact that it appeared on a QI episode that I must have seen a dozen times.
-Dawg says re Mnemonics: Mary's "virgin" explanation makes Joseph suspect upstairs neighbour's penis.
Wrong, just WRONG.
