In the year AD 1130...
- A papal schism occurs when Pope Honorius II dies and Pope Innocent II is hastily elected his successor by a commission of eight men rather than by the full Council of Cardinals. The other Cardinals declare that Innocent has not been properly and canonically elected and thereupon elect Cardinal Pietro Pierleoni as Antipope Anacletus II.
- When King Sigurd I of Norway dies, his son Magnus and his alleged brother Harald Gille both claim the throne. Because Norwegian succession laws in this period are very unclear, and both men have about equal support, an agreement is reached whereby both men will serve as king simultaneously, leading to a very uneasy peace that will soon devolve into more than 100 years of civil war.
- Roger II is crowned King of Sicily by Antipope Anacletus II as reward for supporting his claim to the papacy, inaugurating a 10-year war for control of Sicily and southern Italy.
- King David I of Scotland invades and subjugates the Mormaerdom of Moray (which was the region Shakespeare's Macbeth had ruled before he became King of Scotland).
- The Urnes Stave Church, the oldest stave church still extant and now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is constructed at the Ornes farm in Luster, Norway, and is a crucial link between Viking and Christian architecture.
- A massive, 50-year drought begins the region that is now New Mexico, and will eventually cause several Pueblo settlements to be abandoned, including Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon and the site now known as Aztec Ruins National Monument.
