Types of Adhesives:


Animal Glue
Form: Flake or ground
Composition: Animal skin, hide sinew and bones.
Thinner: Water
Notes: Must be melted by heating in a double boiler.

Casein
Form: Powder
Composition: Milk proteins.
Thinner: Water
Notes: Dries slowly; inexpensive but not good for exterior use.

Contact Cement
Form: Liquid (1 ounce to 5 gallons)
Thinner: Contact cement thinner
Notes: For non-porous surfaces (masonite, some plastics, glass, etc.); not for Styrofoam. Available in flammable (good) and non-flammable (not very good); use with a respirator!!!

"Fastbond 30NF"
Form: Liquid (1 quart to 55 gallons)
Thinner: none that exists yet.
Notes: Contains toluene (aka Toluol). Excellent for polystyrene. Dries in 30 minutes to about 4 hours. It turns from green to blue.

“Hot Melt” glue
Form: Cartridges or coils
Composition: Rubber based polymer; 100% binder.
Thinner: none
Notes: Extruded from hot melt gun; good for almost any small job where strength is not important

Latex
Form: Liquid (1 quart to 55 gallons)
Thinner: Water.
Composition: Latex (synthetic rubber).
Notes: Used where flexibility is called for: cloth, drops, foam. This stuff should not be clamped.

Mastic #11
Form: Thick paste (5 gallon cans)
Composition: Rubber based, solvent dispersed.
Thinner: Mineral spirits.
Notes: Good for polystyrene.

“Phlexglue”
Form: Liquid (1 gallon cans and 55 gallon drums.)
Composition: Vinyl Acrylic.
Thinner: Water.
Notes: Remains very flexible after drying, glossy finish.

“Super Glue”
Form: Liquid; 1 or 2 part (small quantities).
Composition: Cyanoacrylate Ester.
Thinner: None
Notes: Acetone is a solvent for some brands of super glue.

Wheat Paste
Form: Powder ( 1 to 5 pound bags)
Composition: Unrefined flour and rat poison.
Thinner: Water
Notes: For wall paper and other paper gluing.

White Glue (Elmer’s)
Form: Liquid ( 2 ounce to 55 gallon drums).
Composition: Polyvinyl acetate.
Thinner: Water
Notes: School children seem to like the taste.

Yellow Glue
Form: Liquid (2 ounce to 55 gallon drums)
Composition: Aliphastic resin.
Thinner: Water
Notes: Mainly used for wood. Dries in 45 minutes to 2 hours.
