A copepod is any crustacean in the class Copepoda (phylum Arthropoda). There are about 7500 species, most of them marine. They are about one or two millimeters long and most types eat phytoplankton and live as free-swimming zooplankton. Some of them are parasites of other sea animals, though, and some live in the mud and sand of the ocean floor.
